Providing a Better Healthcare Service for Aboriginal People

Brian Ocean Ward, Ocean’s Image (Series), 2015

Western Australia is home to many different language groups; as well as a diverse population of Aboriginal people, including people living in remote areas, regional centres and cities. One thing all people have in common is the need and right to quality healthcare. Quality healthcare includes equitable, respectful and culturally safe service provision.

Health Consumers’ Council has developed this workshop to support health workers and providers deliver services that reflect these values and meet required standards and targets. Workshop content will assist you to gain a better understanding of the needs and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) consumers and enable you to provide more inclusive patient centred care in your own services and organisations.

Workshop Content Includes

• Exploring culture and cross cultural engagement

• Exploring ways to increase service accessibility

• Identifying methods within your own organisation and personal practice to better engage with ATSI people

• Looking at and talking about examples of effective engagement models

• Developing strategies that support patient centred care
